Since tryouts in November, I have really enjoyed my experience as a rookie on Scholars Guild Academy’s varsity softball team. Although this is my first season back to the sport I love after three years, I quickly regained the confidence and skill it takes to contribute to the team. Maybe it’s been the awesome coaches, who are always pushing us to do the best of our abilities. Or, maybe it’s been the encouraging teammates! I interviewed a few of them, and these were the responses:
What is your favorite position?
Harley Minor (Sophomore): “Third Base.”
Sarah Lackey (Senior): “Right Field.”
Lucy Childers (Sophomore): “Either shortstop or second base.”
Kerrigan Welch (Freshman): “Catcher!”
Sidney Minor (Senior): “First Base.”
What was your best play/hit so far this season?
Sidney Minor (Senior): “Hitting that inside-the-park home run against Rock Springs.”
Mia Little (8th Grade, Rookie): “Catching the foul ball in left field during the tournament.”
Alannah “Hum” Maher (Freshman): “Striking out Rock Springs’ number three hitter. It was her first strikeout of the season.”
Harley Minor (Sophomore): “Hitting a double against Peachtree.”
Ellie Brooks (Junior): “Hitting a home run against Rock Springs.”
What have you most improved on this season?
Alannah “Hum” Maher (Freshman): “I’ve improved on my mechanics to help avoid injury.”
Mia Little (8th Grade, Rookie): “Both my pitching and tracking fly balls have improved.”
Sarah Lackey (Senior): “I’ve improved mentally and have learned that things don’t just change overnight. It’s the little steps that contribute towards the change!”
Willow Malcom (8th Grade): “My batting and fielding have improved!”
Lucy Childers (Sophomore): “My mindset is more relaxed now as I focus on just having fun with the team.”
Sidney Minor (Senior): “I try to set a good example on and off the field, push myself to be more consistent, and be the best I can be for my team!”
This team is awesome, and I’m so happy to be a part of it as a left fielder and number six hitter. We’ve just achieved our second consecutive undefeated regular season, and we are now prepping for the playoffs. Wish us luck as we try to keep our winning streak alive all the way up to the championship!
