Senior Farewell: Hot Mess

I’m stubborn, messy, and a handful. If I could hold an SGA student captive for five minutes regardless of their age, I’d grace them with these tips that I learned the hard way.

-you can be both an academic baddie and the life of the party

I’ve been a junior who locked herself in her bedroom for 10+ hours a day to study non-stop and a senior who consistently came late on weeknights. Neither extreme is really better than the other, and the sweet spot is something that takes a minute to find. Going through these phases will make you well-rounded, and I’m still learning how to navigate them. Everyone requires different levels of balance, and you can be a good student who has a ton of fun to make life enjoyable.

-don’t stop making friends

Being able to make conversation with anyone is a valuable skill in every room. Don’t be afraid to go to that summer camp, random function, or ask for a cool girl's Instagram. As awkward as it can be, getting good at small talk can form a connection and an opportunity to experience someone new.

-it's never too late to start again

Remember that hobby or sport from elementary school that you loved? Rediscover anything that made you happy, even if you aren't the best at it. I previously danced competitively for years, and I started ballet again this past fall for the heck of it. Am I as good as I was when I was little? No! But it makes me feel more like myself, and I really recommend it for everyone to restart something they once loved.

-to be confident, you must love and accept every imperfection in yourself

I remember hearing the phrase “If you don’t know who you are, other people will tell you who you are." We all have insecurities, and eventually we must either grow past them or accept them as who we are (as long as they don’t damage ourselves or others). After coming to terms with this, I look at the messier sides of myself with love and not embarrassment. Yes, I do talk a LOT, but my words encourage others. I already have smile lines and creases on my face, but they are a thank you to the people who keep me constantly laughing.

Tell your friends you love them, try everything, and don’t forget to dance!

Xoxo, Ensley
