Fun Holidays in March

March is one of those months that drags on. We are looking forward to summer break starting in May, and everything in the middle begins to feel like just one more obstacle. However, there are quite a few exciting holidays in March, everything from Albert Einstein’s birthday (March 14th) to National Sock Monkey Day (March 7th). In addition to all these great holidays, many things are celebrated all month!
Now, as you may have figured out, there is a holiday literally every day, and some of them just aren’t realistic to celebrate in the obvious way. Let’s take National Adopt a Guinea Pig Month, for example. It isn’t realistic for most people to adopt a guinea pig in March; however, this can be a time to celebrate adopting shelter animals. Whether this is by collecting supplies to donate to a local animal shelter, or making a social media post promoting adoption, this is just one example of how we can take a holiday and celebrate its gist, even if not in the literal way.
So now here are some of the highlights this month, with ideas of how to celebrate.
We will start with a less fun one. This year, it’s happening on March 8th: Daylight Saving Time. While in the fall this is great because it gives us an extra hour, this time we are going to lose an hour of sleep. However, if you’re reading this article on or before March 7th, you get the chance to rest up a little earlier than you would normally, so that getting up on the 8th isn’t quite as hard.
Up next, we have a more enjoyable holiday. On Tuesday, March 17th, we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. This is a very interesting holiday. To learn more about this holiday, read Hannah’s article on our website. While the SGA dress code doesn’t include much opportunity for green attire, one fun way to celebrate is simply to wear green! This is a fun opportunity to spice up your usual SGA polo with some green accessories.
March 20th is National Macaron Day! This is a unique holiday with a sweet twist. Whether you celebrate by trying macarons for the first time, trying a new and exciting flavor, or learning the difference between macarons and macaroons, this holiday is better celebrated with friends - especially if you’re brave enough to try and tackle baking some macarons, often considered one of the hardest confections to bake.
Staying in the vein of sweet treats, March 25th is International Waffle Day. Celebrating the classic breakfast staple can be a lot of fun. Waffles are traditionally a breakfast food, but you could host a waffle luncheon, dinner, or celebrate some of the other ways waffles are used, such as ice cream cones. Another fun way to celebrate is with a new type of waffle, especially from other countries. You can try everything from savory corn waffles from Mexico to Irish potato waffles. Whether you choose to stick with a frozen Eggo or get adventurous with a gourmet creation, this is a good day to celebrate classic foods.
Wrapping up March, on the 31st, we have National Take a Walk in the Park Day. While this sounds pretty boring, it can be a good way to start exercising and building healthy habits. The best part about this habit is that you can make it take as little as five minutes or as long as an hour. This holiday is a fun one to celebrate with a pet, friend, family member, or can just be a good time to take a walk by yourself and clear your head.
Now I hope you’re inspired to celebrate some fun March Holidays. Let us know what fun celebrations you participate in @theguildgazette on Instagram. Also, celebrate March 17th by voting in the Creativity Contest! See you then!
