Flag Football Interviews

"And here comes a pass from the quarterback ....and ... touchdown!" Just imagine you hear that on the bleachers as you watch your friends play and you're eating your favorite snack. That sounds like a great fall afternoon to me, and we can do that because we have our own flag football team at SGA!
The flag football team here at SGA is starting back up again with their practices, and I can't wait to go to the games. Even if you don't understand the games too much, the atmosphere of going to the games is always fun!
Last year, the team won the State championship! I asked some of the girls on the team how it felt, and here is what they said.
Sarah Lackey (senior)- "At first, you feel like you're on top of the world because it is a HUGE accomplishment. We had worked very hard on our skills, attitude, and effort during the season to make it to the state championship, and truthfully, it just felt relieving to know that we had worked so hard and it had paid off."
Sidney Minor (senior, QB)- "All of us being new to flag football, it was pretty awesome and stressful lol. We went into like 8 overtimes, but all that hard work paid off."
Finley Robinson (senior, QB)- "The best feeling ever, especially after like 5 overtimes, it felt so good to know that we had worked so hard to get to this moment!"
Ellie Woosnam (senior, QB)- "It was incredible! None of us expected it, considering we were all new to the sport."
It sounds like it was a great time. It was unexpected to make it that far, but they did amazingly in their first year. They certainly worked very hard and deserved it, and we can't wait for another great season for them!
I am certainly not an expert in flag football, but I'm sure it's more misunderstood than regular football. Here are the players' thoughts on what they think is misunderstood about the sport.
Sarah Lackey (senior) - "I feel people think because it is flag football that it is not a heavy contact sport, but you will leave games with bruises because some of the games can get physical, even though it is flag football."
Sidney Minor (senior, QB) - "It being a "non-contact" sport. There's definitely contact, whether it's legal or not."
Finley Robinson (senior, QB) -" That it is easier than regular. It is in ways, but also harder in other ways!"
Ellie Woosnam (senior, QB)- "I think people don't realize the level of skill and strategy involved in flag football. Because there's no tackling, many people assume flag football is a casual, low-intensity version of tackle football. But in reality, flag football requires a high degree of athleticism, precision, and tactical thinking. The smaller field, faster pace, and limited contact actually demand sharper execution in areas like route running, offensive strategy, and defensive positioning."
For all sports, knowing how to be a good teammate is key to playing well because if you can't work together, you can't win together! Here are their thoughts on what makes a good teammate.
Sarah Lackey (senior) - "A good teammate should glorify God in everything they do on the field, celebrate the victories and the losses, and lift everyone up constantly. Also, celebrate for the other team, congratulate them, and overall just have good sportsmanship."
Sidney Minor (senior, QB) - "Encouragement! Be someone who builds people up, not tears them down."
Finley Robinson (senior, QB) - "Encourager, Listener, Calm"
Ellie Woosnam (senior, QB) - "Someone who continues to build you up even during hard games."
Lastly, the flag football team always has fun on game days, so I asked them who on their team would be most likely to start singing in the middle of a play! Here's their unanimous response.
Ellie Woosnam and Finley Robinson! (Ellie and Finley even agreed and said it has happened many times.)
I encourage everyone to attend at least one flag football game this year, because they are so much fun, and you could even catch Ellie and Finley belting it out! Encourage them and cheer them on as loud as you can. They love it! See you at the stadium!
