Best Books to Read in Autumn

Craving a book that fits the crisp season? Open up one of these recs for a grand old time! Editor's Note: These books are recommended for high school-aged readers. If you are younger, we recommend checking with your parents before grabbing one of these at the library!

If It Bleeds by Stephen King

Do you have a short attention span (like me) when it comes to novels? These smaller tales take you through many different characters, plots, and settings. My favorite is Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, in which you will learn to never bury a mobile phone with a dead person. This spooky book is a collection of short stories that will keep you entertained from the beginning! (Age recommendation - High School)

Death in Her Hands by Ottessa Moshfegh

This gloomy novel is based around a woman who finds the dead body of a girl while walking her dog and follows her journey to uncover the identity of the girl. Moshfegh’s uneasy and suspenseful writing style can’t be beat! Upper high school students would enjoy this recommendation the most.

The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston

Florence Day, a ghostwriter for a well-known romance novelist, must negotiate returning to her hometown while dealing with the unexpected death of her attractive but unexpectedly deceased editor, who reappears as a ghost only she can see.

Hallowe’en Party by Agatha Christie

At a Halloween party, Joyce, a hostile thirteen-year-old, boasts that she once witnessed a murder. When no one believes her, she storms off home. But within hours, she is found dead. This book has made me never want to brag to anyone ever again. It is fit for any high schooler who is up to the challenge!

Maybe Meant to Be by K.L. Walker

This feel-good book tells the story of four high school seniors as they navigate love, friendships, and leaving high school behind at their New England boarding school. Perfect for YA readers!

These are novels that (most) high school students can enjoy! For more recommendations, check out the Barnes and Noble website for their fall picks, the library, or even re-read a book you've loved in the past. Happy reading!
