The History of the Pumpkin Spice Latte

If you are a long-time lover of the autumn season, you already know what special drink might already have a chokehold on you. We know and love her- the Starbucks PSL. You can purchase it hot, iced, or in different flavor combinations in other related drinks. But the question is, how did it magically introduce itself into our fall essentials?

Starbucks first began selling PSLs in January of 2003 and was created with the intention of making a classic pumpkin drink- something that other coffee shops didn't offer at the time. Soon after it was introduced in stores it became an instant bestseller. Just between 2003 and 2015, Starbucks sold around 200 million of these yummy drinks. That is only 12 years of its progress with roughly making almost 17 million PSLs a year.

You may have already noticed that these drinks are already available in this month of August, which is due to Starbucks’ new CEO, Brian Niccol, who is also the CEO of Chipotle. This is a strategic move to encourage more sales from customers, since the Starbucks stock has been at a slumping price recently. Their autumn menu also includes a Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew, Apple Crisp Oat Milk Shaken Espresso, Iced Pumpkin Cream Chai (my personal favorite), and the Iced Apple Crisp Nondairy Cream Chai. Be sure to pick up their returning favorite PSL or curl up with a new fall favorite.
