At SGA there are many important jobs: teachers, administrators, and volunteers. However, in this article, we are recognizing the backbone of SGA’s clubs, their leaders. This article focuses specifically on the leaders of the journalism and yearbook club. The leaders of the yearbook club are Mrs. Nancy Clark and Mrs. Terre Gross, and the leader of the journalism club is Mrs. Cathy Henlsey. We admire these women because without them, there would be no clubs. They provide guidance, insight, and are all around great influences. I had the opportunity to sit down with them and ask them a few fun questions.
Mrs. Clark (Yearbook Leader)
What inspired you to lead/start this club?
"The Yearbook coordinator before me, Robin Clark, (no relation!) put out a call at an Open House that she was stepping down, and that SGA was looking for someone to take over. After about 3 months into that school year, no one had yet expressed an interest...so I volunteered! I felt it was important for Scholars Guild students to have a yearbook, and I wanted to give back to the school that was doing so much for my own family."
What is your vision for this club?
"I have always felt it should be "advisor led but student driven"...meaning that it is YOUR book. I have felt the advisor's role for SGA yearbook is to help facilitate the student's vision for it."
What is your favorite part of leading this club?
"For the past 2 years, Terre' Gross has been the advisor in the classroom, over-seeing the theme, content, etc...while I have been more in the background working on the business end of things and the senior section. My favorite part has been working with senior families on SRAs, seeing their lives unfold through family photos, and reading their senior quotes. They always range from funny and clever, to very insightful...and I LOVE to see and hear how the Lord is working in their lives!"
What’s the funniest moment you recall from a meeting?
"I don't think I have an answer for this one, sorry! "What happens in Yearbook, stays in Yearbook"...but let's just say there have been a LOT of great moments over the years!"
Mrs. Gross (Yearbook Advisor)
What inspired you to lead/start this club?
"I love photography, leading students, and Scholars Guild so it was a perfect fit for me."
What is your vision for this club?
"To create a living legacy of memories for the students and staff of SGA."
What is your favorite part of leading this club?
"Watching the YB Staff come together as a team and I love our prayer circle at the end of each meeting."
What’s the funniest moment you recall from a meeting?
"Our last meeting of this year was when the CONVID19 was just starting to affect the community we were about to close in our prayer circle while holding hands (like normal) but due to the spread of the virus we made a prayer circle with our elbows touching. It was funny and sweet."
Mrs. Hensley (Journalism Leader)
What inspired you to lead/start this club?
"I did not start Journalism Club. Rachel Davidson birthed the idea for Journalism. Mrs. Bryson approached me to become the advisor of the group to help Rachel bring her dream to fruition. Being that my own daughter, Kate, had someone come alongside her (Thank you, Mrs. Walker) when she had the idea for SGA’s event committee (now known as SLC), I could not resist the opportunity to help another student do the same."
What is your vision for this club?
"My vision for the club has been to help the students achieve their vision and their goals through their writing/ publishing, etc. that is a part of Journalism Club."
What is your favorite part of leading this club?
"Working with the amazing students in Journalism Club is definitely the best part. Since I teach 5/6 classes, my opportunity to interact with the older students at SGA is very limited. I enjoy our meeting times when I can see (and hear) them at work. Reading the articles that they write is just icing on the cake."
What’s the funniest moment you recall from a meeting?
"I don’t know what I would consider the funniest but some of the best moments of Journalism Club have been……Brainstorming with Mrs. Brondyke,
Attending the GSPA conference at the University of Georgia, and seeing the great time that everyone had making the videos/ short movies."
A huge round of applause for all of these incredible leaders! We (your students) sincerely appreciate and enjoy participating in clubs with all of you. Never stop inspiring and touching lives the way that you do!
