As you all already know, it is the tenth anniversary of Scholars Guild, so continuing with this theme, today we will look at ten of the coldest cities in the United States. I like the cooler weather, but these cities seem a little extreme.
Fairbanks, Alaska
Fairbanks is at the top of the list because it has recorded a minimum average temperature of -16.9 °F. While it is not always that cold, the climate is still extremely cold. Fairbanks will be the only Alaska city on the list because Alaska is the coldest city in the U.S., so it wouldn't be fair to let it have all the spots on the list.
Grand Forks, North Dakota
The average low temperature in Grand Forks is a whopping 6.3°F. And I thought Georgia weather was crazy…wait…it still is. Fortunately, it is just not THAT cold even though it feels like it sometimes.
Duluth, Minnesota
Again, I love cooler weather, but enough is enough. In Duluth, Minnesota, the average low temperature is about 8.1°F. Just to give a comparison, the average low temperature for Atlanta, Georgia, is around 50°F.
Bismarck, North Dakota
I'm noticing a pattern here. Most of these cities are in North Dakota. In Bismarck, the lowest average temperature is 8.9°F and is only slightly above the other cities in the state. I guess I am just not cut out for life in North Dakota.
Eau Claire, Wisconsin
Finally, a different state! In Eau Claire, the average low temperature is 11.9°F. It is warmer than Bismarck but still too cold for me.
Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Now we have moved from mainly North Dakota to a slightly warmer South Dakota. In Sioux Falls, the average low temperature is 12.8°F. Compared to North Dakota, the weather in South Dakota must seem like summer.
Rochester, Minnesota
Now we head east from the Dakotas and go to the state of Minnesota. In the city of Rochester, the average low temperature is around 14.2°F. This city shares the same low temperature as Minneapolis, which is not very far from Rochester.
Green Bay, Wisconsin
In this city, low temperatures can average at 14.6°F. This city is much warmer than the last with a significant increase of .4°F. I guess "America's Dairyland" is a pretty cold place.
Waterloo, Iowa
This city registers average low temperatures at around 15.9°F. If you are going to Iowa, make sure to take some sunscreen and maybe even a jacket to play it safe.
Idaho Falls, Indiana
Last but not least, we come to Indiana. In Idaho Falls, the average low temperature is about 16°F. Now that is what I call a tropical climate.
In conclusion, there are some incredibly cold cities in our country. In Georgia, we are lucky to have all four seasons, so it is not always super cold or hot. Remember, if you are planning a trip to any of these cities, you might want to pack a coat.
