This is SGA’s second year of volleyball. I play volleyball and It’s also my second year. I play the right side, but sometimes I go in for the middle front. I love playing volleyball! This season the JV volleyball Spartans have won 10 games and lost 2 games, so we are doing AMAZING! If you are reading this article and don’t know much about volleyball and that was all gibberish to you, then I will explain the positions:
Libero: She is the one who you see in a different jersey. She tends to always be diving for the ball and saving her teammates from bruises. Her job on the court is to usually get the first ball and pass it to the setter. Why does she have a different color jersey you ask? Because she is the one player who can substitute in and out whenever. None of the other players can do that so for the referee to understand what is happening, she needs to stand out.
Back row: They are responsible for the first ball if Libero cannot get it.
Setter: She has to get the second ball on the court unless she calls for help and then anyone can set or bump the ball to the hitter.
Hitter (the outside, middle, front, and right side positions are all hitters): The hitters wait for a setter to set to them, and then they jump and hit it down to the group, “BOOM!”
The JV team consists of:
Coach Natalie
Coach Laney
Brianna (speaking captain)
Harley (non-speaking captain)
Ashlyn
Gracie
Ellie
Mazie
Lucy
Kerrigan
Peityn
Emme
Sam
Gabby
Rebekah (me!)
After a recent game against Social Circle, I interviewed Brianna Durham (speaking captain):
Q: What position do you play?
A: “I’m a setter.”
Q: How long have you been playing volleyball?
A: “This is my third year.”
Q: What is your favorite cheer?
A: “Ooo, definitely the 1,2,3 Spartans HU.”
Q: What is your favorite hairstyle to have when playing volleyball?
A: “Hmm, probably the French braid.”
Q: Who on the team is most likely to fall on their face on the court and then get up and laugh?
A: “Ha! DEFINITELY Mazie!”
Q: What is your favorite snack to have before playing volleyball?
A: “Hmm. I don’t know, Cheezits maybe?”
Q: Where did you begin playing volleyball?
A: Loganville Christian Academy
Q: What is your favorite volleyball-related memory?
A: “That's hard, probably when we went to Gatlinburg for the tournament and we were doing our team bonding activities and a momma bear came right up to us and everyone screamed!”
Q: If you had a tip for new volleyball players what would it be?
A: “Definitely encouragement because the new volleyball players need good encouragement to be confident in their playing skills.”
