SGA Bass Fishing

When Scholars Guild Academy first created its athletics program, the SGA Spartans, in the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year, they started with three sports: girls’ volleyball, boys' basketball, and co-ed bass fishing. Bass Fishing was objectively the odd one out of the three, and there was much uncertainty about the permanence of the sport within the program.

It was also the subject of light jokes, with it being an odd choice for an initial sport. As the school year progressed, people thought that Bass Fishing wouldn’t return as a school sport in the 2024-2025 year. Little did we know, Bass Fishing returned to the lineup that school year.

This year, the sports schedule for Bass Fishing is from September 2024 to March 2025, with one GAPPS (short for Georgia Association of Private and Parochial Sports) tournament a month. A GAPPS-approved bass fishing boat is also required for the tournaments. The team itself, consisting of co-ed students ranging from 7th to 12th grade, will be coached by Wesley Farris this year. He can be contacted at wesley.farris@scholarsguild.net.

The sport of Bass Fishing may be humbler and smaller than most other sports, even in SGA. At the end of the day, Bass Fishing is a Spartan sport too, no different than all of the other Spartan sports here at Scholars Guild Academy.
