Believe it or not, the end of the school year is almost here, and it’s nearly time to say goodbye to Scholars Guild’s class of 2021! Before that happens, though, I rounded up a handful of our school’s best seniors, and asked them a few questions about their high school experience and had them share bits of wisdom they have gained over the last four years. Here is what I received from Caedmon McCart, Ashlyn Clark, Robin Still, and Jesse Newman.
What has been your favorite class you have taken at SGA? Why? Favorite teacher? Why?
This is a hard one because there are so many amazing teachers and classes I had over the years at SGA. The spot for my favorite teacher is tied between Mrs. Harper and Mr. Hambrick; however, I can decide on my favorite class which was Spanish 2 in my freshman year! Mrs. Harper is just an amazing teacher, and the way she taught math always made sense to me. She is also basically my second mom, and I love all of her family. Mr. Hambrick teaches Apologetics and talking/debating about Biblical subjects was always so fun! Spanish 2 was my favorite class because there are so many funny stories and memories I have from that class, and Mrs. Penn is hysterical.

My favorite class was AP Human Geography… Class material was really interesting, it’s where I discovered some of my chief interests, and Mrs. Cooper is a wonderful teacher (which I guess answers the next question). She’s really encouraging and supportive and is a really interesting person besides. I love hearing her insight about both life and school-related subjects.
-Ashlyn Clark
My favorite class was Algebra 2 with Mrs. Harper. Out of all math classes, I understood algebra the best so it made me look forward to learning new concepts and actually doing the homework lol. Mr. Lalaian is my favorite teacher because he’s energetic and thrives off of class feedback. He’s very focused on realistic learning and doesn’t mind changing course if the class needs more time understanding a concept.
-Robin Still
My favorite class was probably Georgia History with Mrs. Yount. I took it in seventh grade, my first year at SGA, and made some great friends. It was also a lot of fun and very relatable to learn about the history of Georgia because I’ve lived here for most of my life. Honestly, I have loved every teacher I’ve had at SGA, but Mrs. Yount has had a wonderful impact on my life and is an example of godliness to me.

-Caedmon McCart
What is happening?
-Ashlyn Clark
Exciting, Bold and Whimsical
-Robin Still
Unique and blessed
-Jesse Newman
What is your favorite SGA-related high school memory?
Mr. Hambrick would bring donuts to Apologetics class all the time, and starting off the class with donuts was just amazing!
-Caedmon McCart
I’d say the day we shared our bioethics projects in AP lit. It should be a sitcom episode. Those present would probably agree.
-Ashlyn Clark
Any extended sessions. I loved eating lunch with my friends before class and afterwards, talking and sitting outside in the sun while we waited for our other friends to finish.
-Robin Still
In Chemistry, I accidentally set a medicine dropper on fire. That was fun.
-Jesse Newman
What advice would you give to your younger self or a younger high school student?
Just have fun! Always be going to social stuff to hang out because you will regret it if you don’t.
-Caedmon McCart
The faster you accept what God is convicting you of, the better. We put ourselves into bondage with things and then blame God for the fruit of that bondage, and when He convicts us about it we don’t want to let go. Just let it go! It’s liberating. Sin has deeper implications than you realize at the time; it infects much more than can be seen on the surface.
-Ashlyn Clark
Don’t compare your growth to others, even though you might feel as if you’re far behind everyone else. God has a specific plan for each of us, and He will supply everything we need in His perfect timing.
-Robin Still
Be intentional about making friends, take good risks, and find adults who will invest in you spiritually and personally. You will never grow if you let opportunities pass by you because you are afraid of failing or embarrassing yourself. You can’t live life alone and neither can the people God has put around you. So be the one to take initiative and you will grow in amazing ways all while helping others. You have no idea the things other people are going through, so be the best friend you can to the people God puts in your circle. -Jesse Newman
What has God taught you over the last four years?
Friendship is very important. Some of my closest relationships started at SGA, and I wouldn’t be the same person without them. Having friends to live your life with makes it so much better, and, if you hang out with the right people, your relationship with God will become closer as well!
-Caedmon McCart
A lot more than I can put here. Probably the hardest thing was that forgiveness is a Biblical imperative, not a choice. Also that I don’t have a right to be angry about the things God has put in my life. Whether it be suffering I have experienced or circumstances that I had no ability to pick, God’s will is absolute and He has all authority. That being said, He loves me infinitely much.
-Ashlyn Clark
To be patient, persevere, and understand that nothing is permanent. He is molding me every day with every experience.
-Robin Still
It’s hard to say what God has taught me because of all that He is still teaching me. But, I think if there were a theme to what God has shown me throughout high school it is that He is faithful when I am not. He will not be robbed of His glory, and my failures can do nothing to change the good plan He has for my life.
