Reflecting on the Year

Updated: Jul 4, 2022

This is my last article as a member of the amazing Journalism Team as a Freshman. That’s right! You can’t get rid of me that easily! It’ll be shorter than some of the one I’ve done before, but hopefully entertaining. A collection of random quotes from the articles from this past 2018-2019 school year. You couldn’t see it, but I only cried once while writing this, mostly because I’m remembering the good times, but also a bit from nostalgia.

Everybody, clap your hands!

“Our group leader was Candy Watts. I already knew her through her daughter Caty, but when she pulled out a huge bag of chocolate for the icebreaker, my fondness grew exponentially.”

- Lydia Rice, from "For the Love of Chocolate (My 180 about SGA’s 360)"

“Another idea is to capitalize on your study hall time, unless you (like me) have procrastinated schoolwork and need to catch up on that. You should probably take care of that first”

- Abigail Hanglider from "Hands, Feet and Mouths of Christ: The Harsh Reality of Poverty in Atlanta."

“I talked to a couple of “victims” and realized that our school has a vast majority of people who did absolutely nothing”

- Kelsey Howlett from "If Dancing was Easy, They’d Call it Football"

“Hmm, or maybe that’s just me thinking out loud. Yes, I know talking to yourself is the first sign of insanity, don’t @ me. Go read Lydia’s SGA 360 article and you’ll find insanity is more common around here than SGA probably likes to admit.

- Justin Burnett from "The Stress before Senioritis"

“On the other hand, at Scholars Guild, they have the opportunity to teach students as they would like to and get to know the individual students and families.”

- Michael Powell from "From Public Schools to SGA, Teachers Have This to Say!"

“My new beginnings are April and Lydia moving me around - Lydia keeps forgetting to put me in the sun - but my life is basically infinite. I see all. I know all. I do nothing.”

- Charlie Prickles from "From the Desk of the Chief Editors: The First of Many."

“These things are even more fun in late fall when the GA weather starts to cool down.”

- Sammi Rowell from "An Ode to the Couch Potatoes"

“You willingly and happily watch every Hallmark movie, regardless of the same plot and same ending, just presented a different way.”

- Lilly Branch from "You Know You’re a Christmasholic When…"

"You may be thinking, ‘Why Sammi, why? Isn’t one article cruel enough?’ To that I would say: yes, it definitely is, but that’s not what Journalism Club is here for.”

- Sammi Rowell from "Sammi Memes It (Memes Fallout)

“Let me tell you a story. My good buddy, who you all should know, Lydia, told me a couple of months ago she was going to start working out. Now, I have been friends with Lydia for a long time, and she avoids any sort of physical exertion like high-schoolers avoid finals. So, to be honest, I was shocked. She tells me I sometimes talk like a mom and I probably did in this situation.”

- Kelsey Howlett from "Exercise? Let Me Sit Here and Think about That for a Bit."

“I asked several people the question, “What goes down as the semester progresses?” to which many answers could be given- the weather, my sanity, workload. In fact, almost every response was the same, “Grades.””

- Alex Woolf from "Failure: Defeat is Simply Inspiration"

“If there is only one thing that you take away, let it be a reminder to never stop strengthening your relationship with Christ.”

- Nancy Marie Glasscock from "Are You are Your To-Do List?"

“The only real way to be free is through Jesus Christ, to trust and believe in him and to hand your life over to God… will you lift your eyes to see the promise of grace and love Jesus offers through His Word or will you remain chained to your miseries and in your box of imprisonment?”

- Vivian Rice from "Chained in a Box"

“Remember, a need for encouragement isn’t always obvious, so make sure you pay attention to the people around you so that you will know when the time is right to be a light in another person’s life.”

- April Breedlove from "The Happy Box: The Art of Encouragement"

“Makeup should be used to enhance your natural beauty, not hide it. Makeup is an art; it should be used as one, not as a crutch.”

- Sammi Rowell from "All the Makeup in the World Won’t Make You Less Insecure."

“Do you have that friend or sibling who seems to get all their work done on time? No? Well, me neither.”

- Alex Woolf from "The Bad Habit every Teenager has (Tips to stop Procrastinating)"

“...Atlanta United won its first-ever MLS Cup, becoming the second-fastest MLS team to win the championship.”

- Daniel Wright from "The Cup Called, We Answered: Atlanta United Win MLS Cup 2018."

“Normally, the only time I think of my enemies is when I’m standing before my huge cork board littered with plans for their destruction (Yes, I’m kidding, the cork board's strictly reserved for world domination plans.)”

- Lydia Rice from "Love Thy Enemies (The “Oh Boy” Commandment.)"

“There are many temptations for teens, and Instagram is one of them.”

-Michael Powell from "Instagram: A Teen’s Temptation"

“Having heart, having Strength of spirit, can be the quiet decision to stand by your convictions and that comes from being sure of who you are.”

- Charlie Prickles from "Have Heart: A Letter from the Editors in Chief"

“Inside the packets are money for luck and prosperity, given to the younger members of the family. Sometimes it will have one dollar or it could have 10 dollars. It depends on how generous that family member feels that day. I generally only get $1, but I will take whatever money I can get.”

- Vivian Rice from "Lunar New Year."

“Change is stressful, but if we follow the advice that teachers give us, the warnings from older students, and get better in our weak areas, we should have a smooth transition into high school.”

- Michael Powell from "Moving Up: What You Need to Know Before Going to High School."

“Do you get sweaty and winded when you are sitting in front of your TV playing Call of Duty? Do you have to go take a shower after playing a game of Fortnite? If you answer yes, then you need to start exercising...”

- Daniel Wright from "Are They Athletes?"

“We had a massive debate in Hab [Habitudes] 2 about multitasking, needless to say, I won. ;).”

- Kelsey Howlett from "Simply an Essential Elective."

“Now that you know what spiritual refreshment is, find peace in Christ, and once you do, start a conversation or ask someone a question, and tell them what it means to hit the spiritual refresh button. You never know the impact that can make until you make it.”

- Nancy Marie Glasscock from "Hit the Spiritual Refresh Button."

“It’s fun to get to know other students through interviews and go around pestering people for information. It's great to have people to help edit if you have a huge paper for school or a college admissions essay. It's exhilarating to have your article published and see yourself improve throughout the year. So be on the lookout for Journalism Club applications!”

- Lydia Rice from "Where I Brainwash You into joining Journalism Club."

You may be thinking, why Vivian? Why did you pull quotes from previous articles and compile them all together? Two answers: 1. I had no other ideas and my dear sister Lydia really wanted to reach 100 articles before she graduated and she made sure I knew it. 2. The end of the year is a time of reflections, and for the journalism club, what better way to ponder back on the year than a recap article?

I’ll put this out here: this was NOT an effortless article to put together. For the last three hours, I have spent on my computer, sitting on my sweet mother’s bouncy exercise ball, and chasing my cat off the table while writing this. I read through EVERY SINGLE article that I chose quotes from. Why? The answer is obvious: I wanted to be thorough. I’m thrilled I read through all of them (even if it made me feel like my eyeballs were going to melt). I was able to think about the excellent and fun times we in Journalism had writing these articles. It slightly made me sad, knowing our beloved seniors and leaders April and Lydia won’t be with us next year, and Justin, our other senior.

It was crazy, hectic, and fabulous, and I loved every minute I was in journalism this year. I’ll be back next year! Quoting Sound of Music, which is an EXCELLENT movie that everyone must watch at least once in their lifetime,

“So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, good night!”
