Mrs. Yount has been teaching at SGA from the beginning and has impacted so many students. Sadly, she is retiring this year, so I wanted to interview her about her experience teaching at this school.
How long have you been a teacher at SGA?
I have been teaching at SGA for 13 years.
Do you have a favorite memory from your years teaching at SGA?
All of the amazing students. I have been to D.C with some of the students for the history fair. But just in general the students have all been wonderful.
What was your favorite class to teach?
Modern world history for sure. I’ve started enjoying gov/econ a lot as well, but modern world history is still my favorite. My special in college was soviet history, and there is a lot of that in modern world history. It also helps the students to understand the impact that history has on today.
Why did you decide to become a teacher? Why history?
I was not a teacher before SGA, but my family had been homeschooling, and Scholars Guild was such a great opportunity. It gave me the chance to do something I am passionate about; to help people see the value of history and learn to learn well.
What is one thing your 13 years of teaching has taught you?
Dependence on the Lord. The days that I was most worried about because I didn’t know how class would go, turned out to be the best days because God had a plan. Dependence on the Lord always.
Do you have any funny/interesting stories to share from your years teaching at SGA?
History projects were always so much fun; watching the students engage with history and make life-changing relationships with heroes from history. Watching the students do things they never thought they could do and meet people they never thought they could meet was amazing. I also had many hilarious conversations with students in class over the years. There was one time, years ago when a Holocaust survivor came in and spoke to all of my classes. An older man, visiting, also passed out in my class that day. But all of the guest speakers that came in were always really interesting.
What are you doing next after retiring from teaching at SGA?
Whatever the Lord has next for us.
If you could pass on any wisdom to the students at the school, what would you share?
Micah 6:8 “Act justly, love mercy, walk humbly with the Lord”. I would encourage the students to do that. As far as school is concerned, work diligently, and the rest of it falls into place. Love the Lord, and love other people, and He will make His way known to you.
Mrs. Yount made an impact on all of the students she had, and she not only taught us passionately about history but also how to be better students and how to study well. We will miss you, Mrs. Yount, but thank you for all of your years teaching and caring about each and every one of us.
