Where you lead, I will follow… You hear the theme song of Gilmore Girls playing, and you are just about ready to start binge-watching the show again because it is finally, after all of the summer months, AUTUMN. As Richard Gilmore wonderfully quoted, “I… am an Autumn."
Gilmore Girls is a show about a mother and daughter duo that is still seen on some top ten lists today! How can they still keep that record today when the show was released in October of 2000? Well, they are still iconic in many ways!
Luke’s Diner
They go to Luke’s diner every morning to get their coffee and breakfast. Luke is first seen as a grumpy diner owner, but he softens up as the show goes on.
“Hey, do you guys want pancakes? 'Cause I’m making pumpkin pancakes with homemade cinnamon butter.”- Luke (Season 4, Episode 9)
This is one of my favorite scenes because Luke surprises them with pumpkin pancakes, and it is so sweet!
Lorelai’s coffee addiction is well known throughout the show, starting within the first episode of the show where Luke asks how many cups of coffee and she says none... plus five. So in almost every episode, they are seen going to Luke’s diner.
Also, what is a show without its drama?
Besides just the day-to-day life of the Gilmore Girls, there is a lot of drama that comes with that. One main drama-filled question is who should Rory choose? Are you team Dean, Jess, or Logan - that’s the main question throughout the show.
I personally am on Team Jess because, well... I will let you watch the show, but -- he annotated a book for Rory!
Rory’s love of books
Rory expresses her love of books in her valedictorian speech by saying, “I live in two worlds; one is a world of books." Throughout the show, you are always seeing Rory reading. The total number of books she reads throughout the seven seasons is 339! Reading is one of my favorite hobbies, so it is so fun when I see Rory reading. Some of the books she reads in this series are:
1984 by George Orwell
The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank
Carrie by Stephen King
Edgar Allan Poe: Complete Tales & Poems by Edgar Allan Poe
The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom
Howl by Allen Ginsburg (the book that Jess annotates for Rory!)
There are many more ways that Gilmore Girls is iconic still today, but those are some ways. You should definitely watch Gilmore Girls if you have not because -- although you could watch Gilmore Girls in the summer or spring -- I would recommend watching it in the chillier months so that you can cozy up in a nice blanket and enjoy the fall-themed intro.
The first three seasons are the best by far, but the others are also worth watching. If you are below 14 (Netflix age rating), you should ask an adult before watching this show because some episodes have mature content. So go snuggle up in a blanket and start binge-watching Gilmore Girls again this fall!
