Disturbing Yet Comforting Pieces of Artwork

By Josie Woosnam

Part of the beauty of looking at art with no background information or preconceived opinions of the work is that you can form your own backstory and opinions on how the art ultimately affects you. With that being said, take everything here with a grain of salt. These are just my feelings about each piece and how I am emotionally affected by each. I would, however, urge you to read and take time to process every detail of these pieces and form your own individual thoughts before absorbing mine.

In my opinion, this piece beautifully depicts the feeling behind giving pieces of yourself to so many other people that you’re left with nothing. No energy and no love left for yourself. You become all consumed with the need to help others, your savior complex takes over. When you reach the moment when you know you can’t possibly be everyone’s ‘savior,’ you question the amount of energy you dedicated to fixing others because you know ultimately how much of a toll it took on you. If I were to name this piece based on what I truly feel and see, it would be, “Self Destruction” based on the way one with a savior complex not only lets others take advantage of them, but in a way are taking advantage and hurting themselves.

This piece brings the instant feeling of loneliness to mind. As someone who has battled this feeling, I understand the feeling of being completely and utterly alone, no matter how many people are around you. I think this piece creatively displays the realistic and, in a sense, perceived abandonment one with depression struggles with as they battle their mental challenges on their own.

This painting in my eyes describes the pain that comes from self-isolation and self-destruction. When left to your own negative thoughts, you allow the spiraling to melt you into the numb state of being. Eventually, if left alone, you begin to not notice yourself because your self-abandonment creates a less perceived and more realistic feeling of true isolation.

This next piece displays the crippling feeling of time slipping. One of my biggest fears is not leaving life with an impact, whether that would be on other individual people or society as a whole. This painting pleasingly expresses the worry one has of their life amounting to nothing, but not knowing what to do to leave that mark. I think this piece invokes a sense of invigorating passion of motivation to change and evolve when thinking about running out of time in this way.

Finally, this last piece makes me think of the varying ways of processing. Some people process through difficult circumstances by crying; for others it’s manifested through anger; others it’s simply just feeling strong emotions alone. No matter how you view this piece, it shows the true beauty of how okay it is to process in the way you need, regardless of how other people view your processing.

I hope that by reading this article and absorbing my interpretations while forming your own, you are encouraged. I think viewing art and deciding the meaning behind pieces is so vital in the discovery of yourself. When observing different art forms, one can potentially experience different emotions through the eyes of the artist. I see so much value in being able to truly admire varying mediums of art not just for the time and effort it takes artists to create pieces but also the genuine and raw emotion put into each one. I hope that even through seeing art that has taken forms of sorrow and hurt, you can be comforted in knowing that you’re not alone and just how healing that can be to know.
