Answered Prayers: The Heroes of the Pandemic

Updated: Jul 5, 2022

The Covid-19 pandemic was one of the worst things to happen to America. The hospitals overflowing with patients, the isolation from neighbors, friends and family, it was an impactful time for countless people, both mentally and physically. However, with the aid of some very special people, our great country was able to persevere and get to a better place. The purpose of this article is to highlight those who risked their lives, gave their time, and truly helped our society during that trying time.

It has been said that “America’s nurses are the beating heart of our medical system,” and the pandemic has surely proved this quote to be true. A debt of gratitude is owed to each healthcare professional who worked tirelessly and endlessly to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the American people. Whether it was holding someone’s hand to let them know they were loved, or placing themselves in danger to protect someone else, the healthcare professionals gave everything they had to make certain their patients were secure, healthy, and loved. There is a lot to be learned from healthcare professionals; through their selflessness and fierce determination to accomplish daunting tasks, they are a role model to all.

As a high school student, and former digital learner, I think I can vouch for most students and say that teachers were an excellent help during the pandemic (and all year!). Preparing lesson plans at home, setting up Google Meets when students did not understand a difficult concept, and keeping a brave face through it all, the teachers deserve a round of applause for all they did during the pandemic. Colleen Wilcox once said “Teaching is the greatest act of optimism,” and their support during the pandemic has demonstrated just that.

Finally, perhaps the most important heroes during the pandemic were the morticians and funeral directors. Doing their best to give our loved ones great care, comforting people in their time of need, and ensuring that our friends and family were treated with the utmost tenderness during that difficult season, the funeral industry really aided us during the pandemic. Having lost loved ones myself during the pandemic, I never had to question whether my relatives and friends were going to be given great care, and their celebrations of life went on without a hindrance. The unsung heroes of the nation, they really came through for the American people.

The pandemic of 2020 is something most of us will never forget, but with all of the chaos and craziness that came with 2020, hopefully we will remember the good people. The people of great moral character who fought their hardest on the front lines, helping us stay healthy, educated, and comforted. Thank you to our healthcare professionals, teachers, and morticians--you really are our answered prayers.
