For the past eight years, Scholars Guild has sent students to absolutely DOMINATE the National History Day competition. National History Day (aka NHD), based in College Park, Maryland is an educational program focused on getting 6th through 12th grade students interested in history. Each year, NHD has over 500,000 students competing, anywhere from the United States to Asia to Central America.
This year, Scholars Guild sent 23 competitors to the Northeast Regional Competition at the University of Georgia on February 17. We had competitors in documentary, website, exhibit, and performance. There was only one category where a student from another school placed higher than a student from SGA. Freshman Anderson Fountain competed and won first place in the Senior Individual Documentary division with his project about the Labor Conflict at Homestead. When asked what his favorite part about competing in NHD, he said he enjoyed “the whole experience.” Scholars Guild graduate and former NHD competitor Caleb Wright said that his favorite part about NHD was being able to chose his own topic and learn about it. SGA senior Nathan Wright competed in NHD and went to nationals four years in a row. He said his favorite part about NHD was “Winning. But more seriously, being able to study these historical figures and events and tell their stories.” Eighteen Scholars Guild students advanced to the State competition and will be competing at Mercer University on April 21, 2018 for their chance to advance to the National Competition at the University of Maryland in June.
