Journalism Club in a Nutshell

“Nostros Escribimos La Verdad Con Gracia”

When you think of Journalism, what is the first thing that comes to mind? It could be the deadlines that are always due; it could be the amount of research you’d have; it could even, and most likely be, the hassle of writing a paper for something other than what’s already required. Why would anyone willingly choose to subject themselves to these things or count them as something for enjoyment?

Journalists are those people, and by extension, as a journalism team, we are those crazy people who would willingly subject ourselves to the stress and time-consuming activity of writing articles for something outside schoolwork.

We are well aware of the pain it brings and often are the first to grumble, complain, and procrastinate until the last moment an article is due.

If we know it, why do we continue to come to meetings and sign ourselves up year after year, knowing what lies ahead of us? Let’s look into the ins and outs of the Journalism Club and why we enjoy what we do.

The Journalism Club meets every other Thursday of the month in the education building at SGA. Our room is only a few doors down from the main entrance used in the mornings. We all gather in this room, pull out our laptops, drinks, and snacks, and begin working as a group on the following or current publication. If we’re working on the upcoming publication, then as a group, we decide on the central theme and divide everyone into teams that are rotated each publication. This year we have Feature Writers, Creative Writing, Social Media, Sports, Photography, and the LED (Layout, Editing, and Design) Teams. We use the group Jamboard to make notes of different ideas of things to write about for our upcoming publication. Our next meeting is more of a polishing meeting, looking over everyone’s drafts and mapping out how to bring attention to our articles. When we aren’t in a meeting, we all have each other's numbers to communicate and plan events with everyone outside of those days and occasionally go out to lunch after our sessions.

Aside from all the deadlines and powering through the brain fog that makes it impossible to come up with ideas, Journalism Club brings us together as a group. We’re all doing the same thing, writing stories, putting together a publication, and occasionally embarrassing ourselves on stage to bring more traffic to our website. But we do it together as a group, embarrass ourselves onstage together, and most importantly, as journalists, we hold each other accountable for what we write and present to our audience.

To close, you’re probably wondering what the quote this article started with above has to do with anything. Each year, we translate our club motto into a different language printed on the back of our club shirts. This year, the definition is in Spanish:

Nosotros Escribimos La Verdad Con Gracia

We speak the Truth with Grace
